Trial: Environment & Energy Publications

BioOne has an outage scheduled for next Tuesday, June 28, beginning at noon HST. They expect the downtime to last no more than four hours.

BioOne is a collection of full-text bioscience research journals published by scientific societies and non-commercial publishers. The Library has access to a little more than 100 electronic journals via BioOne.

Trial: The Early Republic

The University of Hawaii at Manoa Library currently has a free trial to The Early Republic from Johns Hopkins University Press. The trial runs through Aug. 4.

Since 1972, 17 volumes of primary material documenting the actions, debates, and thoughts of the First Federal Congress and its members have been collected by the First Federal Congress Project (FFCP) and published by the Johns Hopkins University Press. These volumes of the Documentary History of the First Federal Congress are used by Congress, historians, political scientists, and jurists to understand the most important and productive Congress in United States history.

The Early Republic brings this rich legacy to the fingertips of a new generation of students and scholars. Comprising 17,000 annotated pages and 250 images, the innovative online reference features a cumulative index and robust search engine. The Early Republic will incorporate the full text of future volumes and will eventually incorporate digital editions of other publications relating to the colonial period and revolution.

Trial: Faculty of 1000

The University of Hawaii at Manoa Library has a free trial to Faculty of 1000. The trial ends July 2, 2011.

Faculty of 1000 (F1000) identifies and evaluates the most important articles in biology and medical research publications. Articles are selected by a peer-nominated global 'Faculty' of the world's leading scientists and clinicians who then rate them and explain their importance. From the numerical ratings awarded, we have created a unique system for quantifying the importance of individual articles and, from these article ratings, journals. Both articles and journals can then be ranked overall and, importantly, at the subject, or Faculty, level.

WPSA provides abstracts and indexing of the international literature of political science and international relations, along with complementary fields, including international law and public administration/policy. The database provides abstracts of journal articles and citations to book reviews drawn from over 1,500+ serials publications and also provides abstracts of books, book chapters, dissertations and working papers.

Trial: Journal of Global History

The Library has a free trial to Journal of Global History. The trial expires March 12, 2012.

Journal of Global History addresses the main problems of global change over time, together with the diverse histories of globalization. It also examines counter-currents to globalization, including those that have structured other spatial units. The journal seeks to transcend the dichotomy between 'the West and the rest', straddle traditional regional boundaries, relate material to cultural and political history, and overcome thematic fragmentation in historiography. The journal also acts as a forum for interdisciplinary conversations across a wide variety of social and natural sciences.

IEEE Xplore currently unavailable

Due to a power outage caused by severe weather at IEEE, electronic journals and conference proceedings of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers are not currently accessible.

IEEE Xplore provides full-text access to 115 of the IEEE Society-sponsored journals and magazines from 1998 to the present and the complete collection of proceedings of IEEE conferences (approximately 375 titles) that make up the world's core collection of electrical engineering, electronics, and computer science periodicals.

American Periodicals Series Online
American Periodicals Series Online contains over 1,100 periodicals that first began publishing between 1740 and 1900, including special interest and general magazines, literary and professional journals, children's and women's magazines, and many other historically-significant periodicals.

American Periodicals from the Center for Research Libraries
American Periodicals from the Center for Research Libraries is a full-text resource containing full-color scans of original documents archived by the Center for Research Libraries. The collection spans the nineteenth century through the dawn of the twentieth century, containing labor, trade, literary, scientific, and photographic periodicals, as well as other historically-significant titles.

Outages: Wiley journals and bX recommender service

Two resources/services will be down this weekend for site maintenance and upgrades.

Wiley Online Library, home of journals published by Wiley and the former Blackwell, will be down for maintenance beginning Friday, Oct. 1, at 11 p.m. HST. The outage is scheduled to last approximately two hours. The University of Hawaii at Manoa has access to more than 900 electronic journals via Wiley Online Library.

Also, the bX recommender service that the Library is currently trialing will be unavailable between 9 p.m. HST Saturday, Oct. 2, and 1 a.m. HST Sunday, Oct. 3.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa Library is trialing a new recommender service designed to suggest additional articles that may help you with your research based on the articles you have already accessed. The new service, called bX, is like Amazon recommendations for scholarly articles, generating suggested articles based on the usage patterns of other users accessing similar articles.

To use the new service, go about your research as usual using your favorite databases. When you come across an article you are interested in, click on the "FindIt" button:

If the Library has access to the article you seek, you will be automatically taken to the article. At the top of the article screen, there will be a frame with a link to "Get additional resources related to this." Click on this link.

This will take you to a page with more information about your article. About halfway down the screen, if recommendations are available for this article, you will see a box labeled "bX Recommendations - Users interested in this article also expressed an interest in the following:"

Click on a recommended article title to connect to articles that the Library has access to, or select "View More" to see additional recommendations.

Beginning in 2011, the Library will be switching its subscription from Art Abstracts to Art & Architecture Complete. While our subscription to this new database does not officially begin until 2011, EBSCO has already graced us access and you can begin exploring Art & Architecture Complete.

Art and Architecture Complete is a comprehensive bibliographic database that provides cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for more than 730 academic journals, magazines and trade publications with full text for over 330 periodicals and 215 books, as well as selective coverage for over 70 publications, and an Image Collection of over 64,000 images provided by Picture Desk and others.

Art Abstracts will no longer be available after Dec. 31, 2010, so please update your bookmarks to link to Art & Architecture Complete.

Trial: American History in Video

The University of Hawaii at Manoa Library is currently trialing American History in Video, a streaming video service from Alexander Street Press. The trial is active through Oct. 24, 2010. Click here to access the trial.

American History in Video provides the largest and richest collection of video available online for the study of American history, with 2,000 hours and more than 5,000 titles on completion. The collection allows students and researchers to analyze historical events, and their presentation over time, through commercial and governmental newsreels, archival footage, public affairs footage, and important documentaries. This release now provides 4,848 titles, equaling approximately 1,215 hours.

Wiley outage, Aug. 6-8

The UH Manoa Library is now an active institution in Pubget, a search engine for PDFs in the life sciences. It indexes nearly 20 million life science research documents, including those in PubMed and arXiv.

When you search Pubget, it immediately delivers the PDF of all articles available to you via the Library. If an article is not electronically available via the Library, it provides you with other options for finding the article.

ARTstor is a digital library of nearly one million images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences with a set of tools to view, present, and manage images for research and pedagogical purposes. Become a free registered user of ARTstor and enjoy additional privileges, such as creating image groups, adding personal notes, and downloading the image presentation software.

Ed/ITLib Digital Library
The Ed/IT Lib Education & Information Technology Library provides electronic access to journals published by the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE). The digital library includes international journal articles and conference papers on the latest research, developments, and applications related to all aspects of Educational Technology and E-Learning.

International Medieval Bibliography (IMB)
The International Medieval Bibliography was founded in 1967 with the aim of providing a comprehensive, current bibliography of articles. This multidisciplinary bibliography of Europe, North Africa and the Near East (300 - 1500) contains more than 350,000 records and offers a wide range of search possibilities.

World Shakespeare Bibliography Online
The World Shakespeare Bibliography Online is a searchable electronic database consisting of the most comprehensive record of Shakespeare-related scholarship and theatrical productions published or produced worldwide between 1961 and 2009. Containing over 119,044 annotated entries, this collected information is an essential tool for anyone engaged in research on Shakespeare or early modern England.

The Library had been trialing these three databases in late 2008, but we now officially have subscriptions to them.

University of Chicago Press Journals

We have gone Internet-only with our subscriptions to journals from the University of Chicago Press. Please note that our subscription type for these journals only allows one person to access the title at a time.

Karger Journals

We have also gone Internet-only with our Karger subscriptions, most of them beginning with 2009. Note: Karger only allows electronic access to full-text articles for years that you pay for an electronic subscription.

Dictionary of Literary Biography Complete Online

The Library also began a subscription to the Dictionary of Literary Biography (DLB) Complete online. The DLB provides more than 16,000 biographical and critical essays on the lives, works, and careers of the world's most influential literary figures from all eras and genres.

CLC-Select is an extensive collection of critical essays on contemporary authors.

DAAI: Design and Applied Arts Index
Design & Applied Arts Index (DAAI) covers both new designers and the development of design and the applied arts since the mid-19th century, surveying disciplines including ceramics, glass, jewellery, wood, metalsmithing, graphic design, fashion and clothing, textiles, furniture, interior design, architecture, computer aided design, Web design, computer-generated graphics, animation, product design, industrial design, garden design, and landscape architecture.

Three medical journals go electronic

The UH Manoa Library has a free trial to the Nursing@Ovid database. You can access the trial here: http://micro189.lib3.hawaii.edu/ezproxy/details.php?dbId=53570. The trial runs through Dec. 18, 2008. Nursing@Ovid will allow you to search nursing titles available via Ovid as well as the CINAHL and PubMed databases simultaneously via the Ovid Universal Search feature.

The Roper Center is the largest archives of public opinion information. Access is provided to iPOLL, a comprehensive database of 500,000 questions and answers asked in the US since 1935. All of the major polling organizations in the US are included in this system.

In order to increase Web site security, if you are outside the Library, you will only be able to log in to use Electronic Resources via UH username and password beginning Jan. 12, 2009. This should actually also make it less confusing for most students as most UH services, such as e-mail, MyUH, and Laulima, only allow UH username access. eBooks now available in eJournal Portal

You can now find eBooks in our eJournal Portal managed by Serials Solutions. (For more info on why we use a third-party management service, please read my May post, Big update, with a bit of background.) The biggest plus is that you will now be able to find the eBooks we have access to in the Safari Technical Books collection. Due to the fluidity of this collection, we did not have title-level entries in the eResources Gateway or the online catalog. Now, via the eJournal Portal, you can find out if we have access to books on everything from using Windows to perl scripting.

To search for eBooks, go to our eJournal Portal and select from the drop-down menu to search by "Title contains all words" (unless you know the exact title of the book you're searching for).

For example, if you search for Title contains all words "iphone," you'll find we currently have access to five titles via Safari related to the iPhone (or at least that have iPhone in the title).

One problem with searching by "Title contains all words" though is that the search does not recognize special characters such as +. So, if you try searching for Title contains all worlds "C++," the search will think you're only searching for "C," which is not a word, and return no results. (We do have access to some books on C++ though, so visit the Safari site to find them.)

ScienceDirect outage this weekend

ScienceDirect, the online home of Elsevier journals, will be down for a scheduled upgrade this weekend. The outage is currently scheduled to start Friday, Aug. 1, at 11:30 p.m. HST and last till Saturday, Aug. 2, 7:30 p.m. HST. This of course is an estimate, so ScienceDirect may come back sooner, or if they run into problems, take longer to return.

Blackwell, Wiley journals down this weekend

Both Blackwell Synergy and Wiley Interscience, the journal delivery interfaces for Blackwell and Wiley titles, respectively, will be down this weekend. The intended schedule for the outages are as follows:

Today, 3 p.m. HST: Blackwell Synergy goes down
Tonight, 11 p.m. HST: Wiley Interscience goes offline
Sunday, 3 p.m. HST: Wiley Interscience returns, with Blackwell journals now incorporated

The reason for the outage is Wiley bought Blackwell Publishing last year, and this weekend are migrating all Blackwell journal content to the Wiley platform.

The UH Manoa Library has access to nearly 1,000 journal titles via Blackwell and Wiley combined.

For those of you who don't know, CINAHL stands for Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. Big update, with a bit of background

For those of you unfamiliar with the world of libraries (and perhaps even for some of you who are), I thought I'd offer some background on where the data that populates the UHM Electronic Resources Gateway comes from. The Gateway is actually a compilation of two sets of information about the resources to which the University of Hawaii at Manoa has access. Approximately 14,000 electronic journals, databases and books in the Gateway are managed locally by us. These are individual titles and stable collections that the UHM Library or the medical school's Health Sciences Library has subscribed to on behalf of the campus. However, there are an additional 40,000 or so titles in the Gateway that are managed for us by a third-party company called Serials Solutions.

Why farm out some of our electronic resource management duties? It's the easiest and most cost-effective way to make sure our access information for all these resources are up to date. Most of these 40,000 titles are located in full-text aggregated databases such as EBSCO's Academic Search Premier. In such a database, the aggregator, such as EBSCO, licenses certain years worth of full text from many publishers, big and small, and adds the content to its databases. These enhanced databases give us access to many more journals than we would be able to access via our subscriptions alone. However, the aggregators are constantly working with the publishers on the material they license, and as a result the content we have access to in each aggregated database is constantly fluctuating -- new titles come in, existing titles go away.

With this much regular movement within aggregated collections, it would be impractical for an aggregator such as EBSCO to regularly send out title lists for its databases to its thousands of subscribing libraries, many of whom probably only have no more than a handful of staff who maintain their electronic collections. So instead, the aggregator provides updated title data to a management company such as Serials Solutions, and they keep track of all the changes and nicely package up the information for their library clients to export. We pick up their nice package of information about the 40,000 or so titles we have access to via aggregated databases and throw it into the Gateway regularly (usually once a month).

All this is a long way of saying that we ran the Serials Solutions update today. Our total title count came out to about 200 more than before. This was actually the second time this month that we ran the update, as we recently asked Serials Solutions to start tracking our Project Euclid collections for us. These titles are now in the Gateway.

You can also access Serials Solutions data directly via our e-Journal Portal. This may be more up-to-date for titles in aggregated databases as Serials Solutions updates the Portal on a daily basis.
