Acccess the Star-Advertiser online

The UH Manoa Library now has full-text access to articles published in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser via ProQuest. You can search the Star-Advertiser, as well as its former titles, the Advertiser and the Star-Bulletin, via the Honolulu Star-Advertiser index. To browse issues back to 1996 for the Bulletin and 2002 for the Advertiser, follow the links to the Gateway records for the individual publications.

Update: Certificate Error Warning

Our issue with receiving certificate error warnings has been resolved, and you should once be able to access all electronic resources without receiving the error message.

If you see this kind of error message:

"There is a problem with this website's security certificate." (IE) or "Error code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain" (Firefox)

The connection is being encrypted and is safe to continue (OK/Accept) and use. We are in contact with our ssl certificate vendor in order to determine the cause of this warning.

Trial: bX recommender service

The University of Hawaii at Manoa Library is trialing a new recommender service designed to suggest additional articles that may help you with your research based on the articles you have already accessed. The new service, called bX, is like Amazon recommendations for scholarly articles, generating suggested articles based on the usage patterns of other users accessing similar articles.

To use the new service, go about your research as usual using your favorite databases. When you come across an article you are interested in, click on the "FindIt" button:

If the Library has access to the article you seek, you will be automatically taken to the article. At the top of the article screen, there will be a frame with a link to "Get additional resources related to this." Click on this link.

This will take you to a page with more information about your article. About halfway down the screen, if recommendations are available for this article, you will see a box labeled "bX Recommendations - Users interested in this article also expressed an interest in the following:"

Click on a recommended article title to connect to articles that the Library has access to, or select "View More" to see additional recommendations.

Hamilton Library network outage postponed

The network outage scheduled for Hamilton Library on Saturday, June 19, has been postponed. Access to Electronic Resources should be available as usual via the UH Manoa Library Electronic Resources Gateway.

Electronic Resources logins by UH username only

In order to increase Web site security, if you are outside the Library, you will only be able to log in to use Electronic Resources via UH username and password beginning Jan. 12, 2009. This should actually also make it less confusing for most students as most UH services, such as e-mail, MyUH, and Laulima, only allow UH username access. However, if you do not already have a UH username, please go to https://myuh.hawaii.edu:8888/sessionid=nobody/am-sso-check-status to request one.

eBooks now available in eJournal Portal

You can now find eBooks in our eJournal Portal managed by Serials Solutions. (For more info on why we use a third-party management service, please read my May post, Big update, with a bit of background.) The biggest plus is that you will now be able to find the eBooks we have access to in the Safari Technical Books collection. Due to the fluidity of this collection, we did not have title-level entries in the eResources Gateway or the online catalog. Now, via the eJournal Portal, you can find out if we have access to books on everything from using Windows to perl scripting.

To search for eBooks, go to our eJournal Portal and select from the drop-down menu to search by "Title contains all words" (unless you know the exact title of the book you're searching for).

For example, if you search for Title contains all words "iphone," you'll find we currently have access to five titles via Safari related to the iPhone (or at least that have iPhone in the title).

One problem with searching by "Title contains all words" though is that the search does not recognize special characters such as +. So, if you try searching for Title contains all worlds "C++," the search will think you're only searching for "C," which is not a word, and return no results. (We do have access to some books on C++ though, so visit the Safari site to find them.)

Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg provides free online access to more than 25,000 books in the public domain.

Coming soon: eBook data should be available in the UHM Electronic Resources Gateway in a few months, to provide one-stop shopping for all electronic resources!

Blackwell, Wiley journals down this weekend

Both Blackwell Synergy and Wiley Interscience, the journal delivery interfaces for Blackwell and Wiley titles, respectively, will be down this weekend. The intended schedule for the outages are as follows:

• Today, 3 p.m. HST: Blackwell Synergy goes down
• Tonight, 11 p.m. HST: Wiley Interscience goes offline
• Sunday, 3 p.m. HST: Wiley Interscience returns, with Blackwell journals now incorporated

The reason for the outage is Wiley bought Blackwell Publishing last year, and this weekend are migrating all Blackwell journal content to the Wiley platform.

The UH Manoa Library has access to nearly 1,000 journal titles via Blackwell and Wiley combined.
